| Why sitting?

A monk Daijak of Kosey was practicing zazen at his place, where his teacher Nangak came and said,
“What is your aim of zazen?”
Daijak answered,
“To become a buddha.”
Then Nangak took up a clay tile and began to stroke it on a stone. Daijak asked,
“What are you doing, Teacher?”
“Polishing a tile to make a mirror.”
“Do you think that a clay tile could turn into a mirror by pollishing?”
“Do you think that a man could turn into a buddha by zazen?”

Dogen comments as follows:

The point is that your practicing zazen never makes you into a buddha. Making a buddha is not the business of zazen.

––– “The Zazen Maxim”, Syobogenzo Ch.12

The Daijak-Nangak session, together with Dogen’s comment, would give a hard hit to those Zen-teachers who always say to his disciples just to sit so as to get enlightened.

So, what is the aim of zazen? (To be continued.)
