Just sitting over a thousand years?

(Continued)

So why do Buddhists sit? Nangak teaches Daijak, who has no answer at the moment, as follows:

If you learn zazen, you learn to be a sitting buddha.
                         | Ch.12 “The Maxim of Zazen” of Shobogenzo

That is to say, you do not learn zazen in order to be a buddha; to sit is to be a buddha. In Dogen’s words,

Only because Nangak is a true heir of Buddha, he said that learning zazen means learning to be a buddha.

Their view for zazen seems to be quite strange, doesn’t it? If they assert that sitting is being a buddha, then any man, whoever he is, just sitting calmly will be a buddha. “Buddha” can be a synonym for a sitting man. Visit a buddhist temple, say, Tōdai-ji in Nara, and you see the statue of the Great Buddha who has been sitting over a thousand years. Is He just sitting? –– A further explanation seems to be needed.
