「なに」を「どう」するか。日々、人間の考えることはこれに尽きるような気がする。そのいちばんベースにある、何て呼んだらいいか、コンピュータならＯＳに相当するもの、生物なら DNA。じゃそれを NDA としよう。N=なに、D=どう、A=?。

NDA は自分だけでは決められないし、自分だけのためにあるのでもない。コンピュータだってOSを共有することではじめて無数のコンピュータとつながるのだし、生物にいたっては、DNA の交換・共有つまりセックスと、子孫増殖とが、はじめからリンクされている。人が社会的存在であるかぎり、NDAもやはり、社会に共有されてはじめて機能する。その NDA のコードを書きつづけてきたのが、宗教じゃないだろうか。シンボルを拝むのは宗教じゃない。

道元の「一滴の水」は、どういうコードなのか。それを入力すると、何が起きるのか。ていうか、何を起こせるのか。「全月も弥天も、くさの露にもやどり、一滴の水にもやどる」。水滴に宿った天空はもとの天空ではない。デフォルメされた、新しい天空だ。しかもふたつと同じ水滴はない。水滴の数だけ、微小の天空が生まれる。生めよ。生みつづけよ。そのために水滴は存在するのだ、と。

All that matters for us is probably the question with a form: “What and How should I do?” Every day and night we are confronted by and try to make answers to it. At the core layer of the what-and-how problems there seems to be a set of ‘axioms’ that can direct an answer to each question and lead us to an action, just like an OS that operates a computer, or DNA that defines an organism’s form and behavior. Then, let me call it “NDA” (Jp. Nani “what”, Dō “how”, and A stands for “axioms”).

You can not make up NDA for yourself. Like a computer with its OS shared by a huge collection of other computers to connect to each other, or like a living organism which links its proliferation with sex that is precisely the import and export of DNA between different individuals, NDA can not stand alone but work within the dynamics of society. Religion in its essence is supposed to be an activity of writing the ‘codes’ of NDA. While in Christianity and Islam the basic program has been fixed and the neccessary modifications are provided by theology or fiqh, Buddhist codes have consistently been rewritten and updated.

How can we decode the Dōgen’s code: a drop of water? What will happen when you type it? Or rather, what can we do by typing it? He said, “The entire sky is reflected even in a drop of water”. The sky reflected would not be identical with the sky above. It’s a ‘new’ sky, a deformation of the sky. As every drop of water is different to each other in size, hue, and contour, the number of differently reflected skies is limitless. So Dōgen’s code might be decoded as follows. Be a drop of water, and you will multiply and diversify the sky wthout limit.
