仏器 | Bucci

前にも言った調律師の言葉。聞こえない音が空に満ちている。それを聞こえる音に変えるのが楽器。| As quoted before, a tuner said that the sky is filled with sounds that are never heard by ears. Instruments make them audible.

The earth is abundant in things and the light reflected by things that are rarely seen by eyes. Cameras make them visible.

If we represent dharma as an instrument whose function is unidentified, or an instrument of being if anything, the question is how it would be possible to be a skilled player. In the texts of Buddha-ancesters no one ever said “I am a virtuoso”, whereas some phrases reflecting ‘moments of virtuosity’ were recorded. For example, Dōgen quotes Shítou Xīqiān saying:

長空不礙白雲飛
The sky does not keep clouds from flying.

: Beyond Buddha, Shōbōgenzō

Though nothing is indicated here about Shitou’s thoughts or performances, we can imagine a moment in which he was the sky or clouds or both.

More literally, the phrase above runs:

長 long 空 sky 不 not 礙 stop 白 white 雲 clouds 飛 fly.

It will be interesting to guess how Tang dynasty people described the sky as “long”.
