透明な層 | Transparent layers

当研究所の業務は暗号解読と言ってもいい。われわれは、１３世紀に日本で書かれたということしかわかっていない暗号文書 D75 を解いてほしいと依頼された。誰からの依頼かは忘れてしまったし、気にしていない。これまでに解読できた部分から推定すると、どうやら D75 はある稀有な様相をもった空間の仕様を記述しているらしい。その空間を仮に「Z」とすると、Z の風景がまるで現実のもののように立ち現われる–––現成する–––ところまで解読が進捗したとき、この世界にどんな変容が起きるのか、それはわれわれにも予測できない。

解読の最大の障害は、目の前の暗号の難解さではなく、日頃あたりまえのように受け入れている常識だ。今日もその一つを乗り越えなければならなかった。「夢中説夢」、夢の中で夢を説く。 Z では、それは “現実離れ” という意味ではない。夢の中で説かれた何ものかを、やはり夢と呼ぶ。階層の区別を示すはずの「中」というコードが無視され、夢とそこから生み出されるものとの区別が消失した景観が出現する。 Z の階層が透過される。スティーブン・ホールに倣って言えば、世界を成り立たせている見かけだけの階層に無数の孔が穿たれる。

正法眼蔵第二十七「夢中説夢」から

Our institute’s mission is a kind of code-cracking. We are requested to solve Shōbōgenzō, which is D75 in our designation, a huge collection of ancient codes written by a Japanese monk Dōgen. What has been revealed so far is that D75 seems to be a text coding for an imaginary space Z with an unusual topology. Whereas our work will gradually let Z emerge as if it were a real space, we have no idea yet what could happen when the imaginary meets the real.

A major obstacle for the decoding operation is not the text’s sophistication and complexity but our biased notions prevailing in the ordinary life, from which we always need to release ourselves. Dōgen writes about a “dream within a dream”, by which he does not mean illusory. Something that occurs within a dream is also called a dream. Disregarding the code “within”, which would set a distinction in logical layer between the first ‘dream’ and the second, an unusual space begins to emerge with its each layer being transparent. In another words, the layers of Z are all penetrable, which can be called porosity according to Steven Holl’s architectural essays.
