Do not seek it. Create it.

Master Dongshan was once asked by a monk,
“When cold or heat comes, how can we avoid it?”

Dongshan replied,
“Why don’t you go where there is no cold or heat?”

The monk said,
“Show me the place where there is no cold or heat.”

Dongshan said,
“When it is cold, it’s intolerably cold. When it is hot, it’s intolerably hot.”

| ‘Spring and Autumn’, Shobogenzo Ch.37

Through an apparent contradiction, their talk seems to suggest a turn: from seeking comfort somewhere to creating it anywhere, creating the cool and warmth within the extreme heat and cold.
