世界は小さな世界の集合である|Across myriads of tangible worlds (2/2)

人、物、事、しかも現存するものに限らず、過去にあったもの、これからあるかもしれないものにも皆、それぞれの小界(こかい)があって、現在の小界に因果的に連結されている。そればかりか、分析哲学にいう「可能世界」も可能小界に分割されて、やはり小界の一部を作すと考えられる。こうして最大限の幅で考えられた事物 𝑥 の全体を 𝛤 として、それらすべての 𝑥∈𝛤 にわたって各々の小界 𝑈(𝑥) を併せた巨大な集合を考え、これを世界 𝑊 と呼ぶ:

ふつうの言葉で言い直そう。世界とは、人や動物、植物、岩石、その他諸々の事物の集合ではなく、事物の近傍(小界)の連なりなのである。これに伴い、「私が世界に存在する」という従来の描像に代えて、「私は私の小界を通じて世界に存在する」という描像が採用されることになる。自己の小界は、無数の他者の小界と、ときに重なり、ときに離れながら、世界という無際限の空間の波動のなかにある。一点 𝑥 の振動は一小界 𝑈(𝑥) を振動させ、一小界の振動は百千万小界に伝播し、やがて世界の辺際に去っていく。

自己 𝑥 の行住坐臥はじつは自己の小界 𝑈(𝑥) の行住坐臥なのである。自己の洗面沐浴は自己の小界の洗面沐浴なのである。ゆえに道元はこう述べた。澡浴し、香華を添えるは、ひとり身心を浄めるにあらず。山河大地を浄め、日月天空を浄め、過去現在未来を浄めるものなりと。

仏仏祖祖嫡嫡正伝する正法には、澡浴をもちいるに、身心内外、五臓六腑、依正二報、法界虚空の内外中間、たちまちに清浄なり。香華をもちいてきよむるとき、過去現在未来、因縁行業、たちまちに清浄なり。|正法眼蔵第五十・洗面

Everything has its kokai (小界), a causal environ surrounding it. By ‘everything’ I mean any human being, any living creature, any physical object, or any event which occurs now, occured in the past, or will occur in the future. Now let 𝛤 be the entirety of things of all entities like that and redefine the world 𝑊 as the union of kokais 𝑈(𝑥) for all x ∈ 𝛤;

To put it in ordinary words, the world 𝑊 is defined not as the totality of things and events but as the totality of kokais of things and events. The ‘world’ redefined in this way will replace the vision that each object exists in the world with the new scheme that each object exist via its kokai in the world. Myriads of kokai, intersecting with and departing away from one another, dynamically make up the world that is an immeasurably big space, where the osccilation of any object x simultaneously becomes the oscilation of its kokai U(x) to be transmitted in succession to millions of other kokais, eventually reaching as near as the limit of the world.

You are always with your kokai; if you wash your face or take a bath, it is your kokai that is actually wased or bathed. It is not for the sake of yourself that you keep your body and soul clean and beautiful, but for the sake of your kokai, which in turn can transfer its cleanness and beauty to other kokais nearby, transmiting them toward the furthest edge of the world. That is why Dogen ascerts that your act of cleansing your face, hands and feet simultaneously cleanses everything across the world, across time:

When you wash in the true dharma authentically transmitted by buddhas and ancestors, the inside and outside of body and mind, as well as the inside, the outside, and the in-between of the five organs, six sub-organs, body, mind, environs, the world of phenomena, and empty space are immediately cleansed. When you cleanse with incense and flowers, the past, present, future, causes and conditions, actions and effects are immediately purified. | “Wahing the Face” in Shōbōgenzō
